1. IfS-Jahrestagung 2021: Wirtschaft und Menschenrechte
Aufgrund der breiten Thematik ist nun eine ganze Veranstaltungsreihe zur Diskussion von Globalisierung – Menschenrechte – Wirtschaft geplant, die am 22. April von Weihbischof Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Diez und Prof. Dr. Dr. Ulrich Hemel eröffnet wird. Neben dem Studientag finden fünf Akademieabende sowie ein Workshop statt:
Die fünf Akademieabende finden jeweils von 19:00-21:00 Uhr zu den folgenden Themen statt:
- 06. Mai 2021: Menschenrechte schützen – Was bewirkt ein Lieferkettengesetz?
- 20. Mai 2021: Eine Frage der Verantwortung: Unternehmen gestalten soziale Entwicklungen
- 24. Juni 2021: Menschenrechte unter Druck – Was mein Verhalten ändern kann
- 09. September 2021: Menschenrechte weltweit schützen – Internationale Partner im Gespräch
- 25. November 2021: Abschlussabend – Präsentation der Ergebnisse und des Buchprojekts
Der Workshop findet am 03. Juli zum Thema Heute Verantwortung für morgen übernehmen: Erfolgreiche Projekte für eine sozial, wirtschaftlich und ökologisch nachhaltige Entwicklung statt.

- Offene Projektstelle zur Frage: Wie kann die Bilanz von Verbrauchsprodukten von Ärztinnen und Ärzten verbessert werden?
Zu dieser Frage bietet das IfS in Kooperation mit ROGG Verbandstoffe ein medizintechnisch-ökologisches Projektpraktikum an und spricht interessierte Studierende der Medizintechnik, der Betriebswirtschaft, der Umwelttechnik, des Ingenieurwesens oder verwandte Studiengänge an.

1. IfS Annual Conference: Human Rights in Business and Economy
Due to the broad topic, a whole series of events is planned to discuss Globalization – Human Rights – Economy, which will be opened on Thursday, 22 April, by Auxiliary Bishop Prof Dr Karlheinz Diez and Prof Dr Dr Ulrich Hemel. In addition to this study day, five academy evenings and a workshop will take place:
The five academy evenings take place from 19:00-21:00 on the following topics:
- 06 May 2021: Protecting Human Rights – What effects can a supply chain law have?
- 20 May 2021: A question of responsibility: Enterprises shape social developments
- 24 June 2021: Human Rights under pressure – What individual behaviours can change
- 09 September 2021: Protecting Human Rights worldwide – International Partners in Discussion
- 25 November 2021: Closing evening – Presentation of the results and the book project

2. Current publications
We published articles in the following research areas:
Digitalization & AI
Abstract [en]: Opportunities and risks of the technological possibilities, which are termed artificial intelligence (AI), arouse not only interest and enthusiasm, but also uncertainty and fears. AI is perceived not only as a technical support and assistance system, but also as a competitor to human intelligence. People fear that they may become redundant. AI opens the way to a far-reaching technological reorganization with complex social and individual consequences. Concentration of power and the infiltration of democracy are currently unwanted side effects of this development. Questions of freedom, justice, responsibility and equality of people must be answered again from a democratic perspective in the light of technological changes. Politics and, ultimately, the state and its instances as a regulatory authority play a central role in balancing the various interests.
With this in mind, a commission set up by the German Bundestag in 2018 dealt over two years in different formats with the technical mechanisms of action and the respective possible consequences in various areas of society. This article analyzes the final report of the Bundestag Enquete Commission. In terms of content, both the current state of knowledge in the respective social areas and the quality of the summarized findings are analyzed for further social discourse and for political decisions. The analysis raises awareness of critical aspects and asks the question of what value this report should provide for the further development of the federal government’s AI strategy. The lack of overarching methodology is discussed in detail as an essential criticism in addition to an underexposed link between goals and the chosen approach. Finally, the demand for comprehensive scientific thinking and cooperation of the relevant disciplines is raised as a requirement in order to accompany political decisions in a well-founded manner. In this respect, the analysis sees itself as a “wake-up call” to rein in the future development of AI with the values of a democratic system!

Abstract [en]: Even before Covid the economy has been unstable. The virus only sparked a crisis that would have arrived anyway. This is because it has been long since machines took over the material work and since computers/AI took over the structured knowledge-based work such as robotic controls, data analysis or driving cars. That which stays and grows is the work on the human being and the work with knowledge – between humans. A productive handling of knowledge depends on social behaviours, mental health and cuture.

Abstract [en]: In the future, work will mainly be work on the human being and work with knowledge between humans. Productivity, here, will depend on co-operation, mental health, values, and culture. Thereby, faith returns to be the focal point of societal development, but it also has repercussions for the churches.
